About

Our Festival Story

The March Summer Festival in Cambridgeshire is a vibrant and dynamic event that brings together music lovers, artists, and performers. Our festival showcases a diverse range of bands, exciting events, and endless entertainment opportunities. Join us as we celebrate creativity, community, and culture in a lively and inclusive environment.

The festival began in 2000 with a few local groups coming together to put on a summer
show for the town for the millennium.
Andy O'Hanlon , the Arts officer at  FDC, was putting on an amazing festival called Colourscape which included a huge inflatable which the public could walk inside to experience the otherworldly colours and listen to music.  A new committee was
formed to organise acts in support so we all joined together.

Our part of the show which ran for a week had MADAOS, March operatics, doing a revue of
songs from the shows, Anglian Players put on a satire about the new traffic light system at
the time, Phoenix put on a mini pantomime, Llama Drama recreated a Round the Horn radio
show and there was a band set from the local Neale Wade school – they were kids then
they’ll be in their mid forties now.

That same format ran the following year but the festival really took off in 2002. There was no
Colourscape but the festival committee managed to get lottery funding as well as grants
from the town and district to put on a much bigger show with a big stage in West End Park.
It was then in much the same format as now with the festival running from Friday evening to
Sunday evening. Then as now we had stage acts and other activities in the park including
the Lions Gala and children’s entertainment.

We also had a big parade which included floats, representing many local organisations; with marching bands; the mayor and carnival prince and princess in a horse drawn carriage: vintage cars and many more .
Sadly with new regulation and safety concerns it became unfeasible to continue with the parade. Since that’s come to an end we’ve invited classic cars on to the Festival site. Recently we’ve stated having a dance tent at the far end of the park in
the past we’ve had wrestlers, a clown, a dog show, storytelling, fancy dress and colouring
competitions.

This year we didn’t get some of our expected funding so it’s been touch and go but a funding
partnership with Love Music Hate Racism has enabled us to go ahead. It is our 25th anniversary and we believe we have a
special show for the occasion.  We are still looking for more funding to help the festival go ahead this year and in future year, so please do get in touch if you want to help and be involved in March's biggest and best community event.
